A new garden is at its most fragile in its first year, and at its most misunderstood in its third. Planting that was placed with room to grow looks sparse until it fills in, and then fills in faster than anyone expects. What it needs is not the same in March as in August.
Maintenance is the part of this business that decides whether the design survives. A plan drawn for a particular light and a particular water budget stops being that plan the moment it is pruned like something else, or watered on a schedule that suits the lawn and drowns everything next to it.
We look after gardens GMZ designed and built, and gardens we had nothing to do with. Either way it starts with walking the property, because pricing maintenance from a photograph is guesswork.
The maintenance walk is a fixed price and, like the design consultation, is not credited toward later work.
